Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation (OARC) is pleased to announce the return of the Rising Star Talent Search, beginning Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Relish, 7152 Ogontz Avenue in Philadelphia. Now in its 3rd season, the Talent Search will run through June 2011, and will feature emerging singers, musicians, and bands from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and beyond. The competition this year will include R & B, Jazz, Blues, and World Music artists; professionals are not eligible. The winner will perform at the 2011 West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival, and will receive a $5,000 grand prize. There will also be cash prizes for the second and third place finalists.

THE COMPETITION

The Rising Star Talent Search is not an “open mic” contest. Auditions are required prior to entering the competition. To schedule an audition, contact Ty Holland at OARC. He can be reached at 215-927-5455 or at tholland@oarcphilly.org. Contestants entering the competition must register, and pay a $20 non-refundable registration fee. At the time of their performance, contestants may not be under a recording or talent management contract of any kind. Contestants will not be compensated to perform during any phase of the Talent Search. All contestants must be age 18 or older.

Mimi Brown, radio personality at WDAS FM, will host the Talent Search. Mimi will also be one of the judges, along with a guest judge each week. Members of the audience will collectively be the “third judge”, and participate by voting for their favorite performer. The audience will vote by way of an on-site text messaging system. Each night, the performer receiving the most votes from the audience will receive one vote. The two judges will also cast their votes. The performer receiving a majority of the votes will be declared the winner, and will move into the next round of competition. In the event of a tie, Ty Holland will cast the deciding vote.
During the 15 week Preliminary Competition, 4 performers will compete weekly, performing for up to 15 minutes each. A winner will be announced each night. Winners of the Preliminary Competition will advance to the three-week Semi-Final Competition. During the Semi-Finals, a winner will again be chosen each night. These three finalists will compete in the Talent Search Finale. The grand prize winner will be determined at the Finale.

THE PRIZES

The Talent Search grand prize winner will perform at the 2011 West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival, and receive $5,000. The second and third place Talent Search finalists will each receive $1,000. Relish will be the location of all Talent Search competitions, except for the Finale. The Finale will be on Festival Grounds, Stage 2, on Friday, June 17, 2011.

Employees of OARC, Relish, and WDAS Radio, as well as employees of any sponsors of the Rising Star Talent Search and/or the West Oak Lane Jazz and Arts Festival, are not eligible to participate in the competition.
